St Edmund’s House is a sixteen bed specialist care home for adults with a range of complex neurological disabilities. It provides 24 hour care to people over 18 years of age who are highly physically dependent, many of whom will be wheelchair users and need full assistance with most activities of daily living.

Nursing care in the Long Term Care Unit is provided on an individual basis and residents are encouraged to maintain their independence within a calm, comfortable, safe, homely environment. Staff are trained to exceptionally high standards to ensure that all residents are cared for in a warm friendly and professional manner and are listened to.
Each individual will be treated as one, ensuring their privacy is respected at all times, that their dignity is maintained and each individual choice of lifestyle is not infringed upon or discriminated against, regardless of age, ethnicity, sex, country of origin, disability or religious belief
The staff are on hand around the clock providing professional care and support. They establish an individual person centred plan of care with each resident and their family which is maintained on a daily basis and evaluated monthly or earlier if appropriate and regular assessments are made to ensure the needs and outcomes of each resident are met.
We aim to make our residents lives enjoyable and satisfying enabling them to meet new friends and keep in touch with existing ones.
Residents are registered with the local medical centre and have two booked doctors’ visits per week and other visits can be arranged at other times should they be required. Local out of hour’s medical cover is also provided. Specialist nurses, including speech and language therapists, a dietician and physiotherapists are available along with our own care staff and pastoral care, together with administration, housekeeping and maintenance staff.
There is a Physiotherapy department in the Hospital with private cubicles and a gym area.

- Acquired brain injury, including strokes and low awareness level

- Parkinson’s Disease
- Huntingdon’s Disease
- Motor Neurone Disease
- Cerebral Palsy
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy
- Old Age; Degenerative Diseases, Cancers, Palliative Care
We can accommodate residents with tracheostomies and peg tubes.
The condition itself does not necessarily mean that a placement will be suitable. We carry out a full pre-admission assessment to ensure that the service users activities of daily living and expectations and outcomes can be met before admission.
Residents can relax and participate in the life of the hospital. There is a large bright living room with a TV and stereo equipment with doors leading out to a sensory garden. A dining room, a sensory room and a multi-denominational chapel with a weekly service. Most of the rooms have peaceful views across the garden. The garden contains a summer house, attractive beds and a patio area as well as a sensory garden which are wheelchair accessible.
All bedrooms are single rooms which are tastefully furnished and most have en-suite facilities. Every room has a telephone point and internet connection and meets stringent fire and safety regulations. Residents are encouraged to make the room their home with personal effects and small items of furniture and other treasured possessions, pets are welcome to visit too.
There are also additional shower and bathrooms, all of which are wheelchair accessible and have hoist facilities.
A range of complimentary services are available and some require an additional charge: Chiropody is available every six weeks, a laundry service is provided on site and there is a regular personal shopping service. The hairdresser visits weekly and opticians and dentists may be seen locally or they will make a personal call. Residents are welcome to retain the services of their existing therapists provided the unit is aware of the identity of such persons and their visiting times.
There is a toiletry shop and newspapers and magazines are delivered.
There is a daily choice of menu, all produce is locally sourced, freshly prepared and cooked on the premises There is always a choice of hot and cold dishes and special diets are catered for. We can also provide dishes for individual taste. All meals are encouraged to be taken in the dining room however residents have the choice of eating in the privacy of their own room if they wish. Light refreshments such as tea coffee, soft drinks and biscuits are available throughout the day and night on request and there are beverage making facilities in the dining room.
The layout of the environment lends itself to separate areas of space for different age groups, with the ability to be able to be on their own or provide support for each other. We can also accommodate friends and relatives for short stays if relevant.
It is vital our residents keep active mentally and physically to make the most of every day.
They are encouraged to maintain any leisure interests and hobbies are given the opportunity of joining in activities by our Activities Coordinator. There is a greenhouse on site and a large raised bed allowing residents to do some gardening if they wish. Various musical and other events are scheduled for the resident’s enjoyment throughout the year.
We also organise a variety of days out and there is a library facility which can supply large print books, talking books and newspapers. Taking in to account choice and ability other activities include: handicrafts, games and puzzles, quiz’s, visiting speakers, live performances’, tea parties and religious observance services and other local community events.
We have an open visiting policy welcoming visitors and pets throughout the day.
The Hospital is committed to providing a consistently high standard of care. We believe that this can best be achieved by integrating quality mechanisms into all aspects of the organisation at all times by all staff. We invest in our staff and develop their full potential through a commitment to training and education. We wholeheartedly support the governments Dignity in Care campaign along with The Gold Standard Framework developing a systematic and high quality approach to end of life care. The Hospital further believes that the Quality Assurance Programme should be ongoing, continuous and with measurable outcomes that can be acted upon.
We also use Clinical Governance which is a framework to help all clinicians, including nurses, to continuously improve quality and safeguard the standard of care given. This is undertaken monthly using Key Performance Indicators.
Over the years All Hallows Healthcare Trust has achieved many awards including the Investors in People Accolade.
The Hospital accepts service users from the private sector, social services and the National Health Service. Generally all our admissions will be planned with each service user having undergone a full pre-admission assessment to ensure that the unit is able to fully meet their needs. However, in an emergency it may be possible to admit a service user at short notice but the normal procedure would be followed i.e. service user must still undergo full assessment to ensure their needs can be met by the unit.
We encourage all prospective service users to visit the unit and spend a day with us before taking the decision to make it their home. Should they make the decision to live at The Hospital, a comprehensive review of the arrangement will be undertaken by a Named Nurse and to ensure the service user is happy with the care they are receiving.
